Lic Colony

In the LIC Colony, Correa uses the Radburn principle to produce a township of cul-de-sac roads and a continuous network of car-free, green spaces with housing blocks of two distinct types. Each of these types are based on a structural module six metres wide with the more conventional apartment type rising five floors. However, a more inventive stepped section type defines this colony the best. Containing four apartments on the lower floors and two
apartments on the higher floors, this stacked configuration accommodates apartment sizes of various types and sizes that are accessed by a central staircase located in a smaller bay in between the two six-metre blocks. As a result of this stepped section, each building caters to different needs and income groups while also providing each apartment with generous open-
to-sky terraces that have over the years been appropriated by residents. The colony, interestingly, also comprises of a section of rental units still owned by the LIC that highlights the importance of tenure in determining form over time.
