Agripada Scheme 2

Built over three phases starting in 1898 and ending in 1911, the distinctive H-shaped tenement blocks of this scheme accommodate a central toilet and bathroom core on every floor designed to be shared between the two wings of the block and accessed by a shared corridor. The project is also noteworthy as it represents the shift in the use of materials and technology for mass housing where rather than the load-bearing structures of the first chawls we find in this project the use of ferro-cement technology in the third phase that was built after 1910. But perhaps most importantly, even though the BITs landmark 63.5 degree light and air rule was formally incorporated as a bye-law only in 1912, this second scheme in Agripada is already a built example of the rule that stipulates that the distance between any two structures must be such that the angle formed between the roof of one building and the base or plinth of the other should be no more than 63.5 degrees to ensure adequate light and ventilation even to the lower floors.
