The Freedom Fighter Community
This project is situated in one of the most densely populated areas to live in, the industrial center of Dhaka. Overpopulation is a global issue that is in need of architectural design solutions. In a more general sense you could say that the real global issue here is the fact that we are reaching the limits of what our planet has to offer both spatially and resource wise. In Dhaka you can already see the consequences of this reality.
The plot of the Tejgaon old industrial area that the design accustoms for is owned by freedom fighters that received the land from a fund that takes care of the people that fought for the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971. The freedom fighter families on the plot desire to develop the land, but are not sure how. To create a likely development strategy that prevents the land to be sold and developed by private investors we designed this affordable housing plan with a focus on sustaining the existing community. The eventual design proposal for the freedomfighter land in the Tejgaon area consists out of 3 strategies. First, repurposing the old industrial with aesthetic and structural quality in to housing. Second, a new building inspired on the old industrial heritage is designed. and Third a tower is designed out of elementary shapes. The simple structure with brick infill and a double facade makes the towers affordable, dense and provides a pleasant indoor climate.
